BUT ARE ALL PROTEINS EQUAL?
One issue which makes comparing proteins difficult is that quality can vary.
While many companies will lead you to believe that there are huge variations in quality, this is usually not the case, unless they are adding fillers.
Assuming you are buying a product which only contains dairy proteins (the ones selected for our comparison are), and almost all being whey based, the comparison is much easier.
RAW WHEY PROTEINS ARE NOT MADE BY SUPPLEMENT COMPANIES.
These proteins are made by massive dairies throughout the world, with supplement companies such as us (and many other companies) simply purchasing from the dairies/cheese makers.
In Australia there are very few whey manufacturers of Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC80), and Whey Protein Isolate (WPI90), which means if you are buying an Australian or NZ made protein it is likely to come from the same manufacturer which makes our raw whey. In fact, for many years we have exclusively used the whey from this one manufacture as we believe it is some of the highest quality whey protein which can bought anywhere in the world - and they export this product world wide!
WHAT ABOUT AMERICAN BASED WHEY PROTEINS?
Generally, whey's made in Australia and NZ have some advantages over U.S made whey. Firstly, as Aus and NZ whey's come from grass fed cows the whey often has better nutritional qualities (higher protein and less fats and carbs) and less lactose. Perhaps the largest advantage is that Australian and NZ dairies usually have very strict standards in terms of restricing pesticides and any Geneticaly Modified stock which is fed to cows. In the U.S, the same restrictiosn often don't apply which means U.S based whey's would be considered less natural.
WHAT ABOUT ADDITIVES, FILLERS AND ANYTHING ELSE?
Given a lot of whey comes from similar sources the biggest change to the quality of a finished product comes down to other additives which supplement manufactures put in. While many companies advertise "stacked with Glutamine or BCAA's", only a quick check of the label is required to see that any good quality whey already has masses of BCAA's, Glutamine and so on, in fact whey is entirely made up of a total amino acid spectrum, in what is considered a perfect balance.
If you are unsure of this, we encourage you to check the amino acid tabels of our products compared with what you are currently using - just be sure to standardise the dose so the comparison is equal.
PERHAPS THE BIGGEST CATCH WHEN BUYING PROTEIN IS THE OTHER FILLERS WHICH COMPANIES PUT IN.
Some are said to increase taste, some mixability, but without question all reduce purity. In our opinion, if a company uses a higher enouh quality whey (which we certainly do) the only additives necessary are a flavourer and a sweetener. If your protein has much else, just remember it means you get less of the protein, and purity as well as quality are what we are paying for.
The simplest way to judge an ingredient list is that "less is more", if you see much other than protein we suggest you look for another product.
WHAT DOES "PER STANDARDISED 30G OF PROTEIN MEAN"?
With so many proteins providing all different kinds of final protein ratios and servings sizes which make comparisons difficult, we have established a "standardised serve". For this purpose, a standardised serve is 30g of actual protein. The higher the protein ratio of your product, the lower the serving will be required to get 30g of actual protein.
