Everything you've ever wanted to know about Thor of Oz

Posted by Hannah Rabe on Jun 27, 2017 in #Feature Articles.

You might’ve seen our Bulk Nutrients ambassador Andrew Lutomski pop up on our social media every now and then, but have you seen him as his alias Thor of Oz?

The likeness is incredible, yet it wasn’t always this way. Andrew has spent the last two years vigorously working out and maintaining top nutrition to impersonate Thor.

Alongside his role as Thor, he’s a health and fitness coach, actor and pop culture icon.

Read on to find out how Andrew has become a fitness and comic convention icon as Thor of Oz in just the last couple of years.

How long have you had the superhero alias Thor for?

I created my own costume for Oz Comic-Con in June 2015. So I guess since June 2015.

Where did the idea come from?

A friend of mine actually told me years ago that I looked like Thor – back when the first Marvel Thor movie came out in 2011.  Back then I didn’t have long hair, so when I grew it out in 2014. Then comments really started to fly at me. On a daily basis I was told I look like Thor, which lead to me Oz Comic-Con.

How did you get started with it?

I did some research on Cosplay, having not known a lot about it. Back in 2015 I didn’t know much about comic conventions either, having never been to one. I have always been into pop culture, movies and the like, but not so much comics. I’m glad that I discovered this, it has been life changing to be honest and really helps me stay in touch with my imagination.

What do you love most about Thor?

His luscious blonde locks. I’m kidding, but they are good… I love mythology and Thor is so much involved in this. His strength and physical attributes are widely recognised and I think envied by most of your typical males, myself included. To be able to portray this character and do it well is an honour.

What’s the best event you’ve ever attended as Thor?

I don’t think anything has equaled the feeling of my first Oz Comic-Con in June 2015 here in Melbourne. Those two days were such an experience, I met some of my now closest friends there. Not far behind is Oz Comic-Con Brisbane in September 2016. Bulk Nutrients went to our first Oz Comic-Con together there and we had an absolute blast! I had such a great time with my fellow ambassadors promoting health and fitness.

How often do you work out to maintain your Thor physique?

My current workout regime focuses on building arms and shoulders – as they are most recognised when I’m in costume and in character.  My current program looks like this:

  • Day 1: Shoulders and back.
  • Day 2: Triceps and biceps.
  • Day 3: Rest day.
  • Day 4: Strength (squat, bench press, dead-lift) and core.
  • Day 5: Calves and hamstrings.
  • Day 6: Rest day.
  • Repeat.

This allows around six days between each workout. Sometimes I’ll skip a rest day if I’m feeling particularly good. Other weeks I might take an extra rest day depending on how I’m feeling.

What’s your favourite workout?

I am really enjoying my arm day workout at the moment. Training arms in one day is the most effective way to develop them and over the last 6 – 12 months I’ve seen some great progress doing it that way. You can try out my arm workout in my blog “Thor’s Superhero Arm Workout”.

How do you think your appearance as Thor inspires others to get in shape?

I really enjoy telling people my story about how I got started with my fitness and as Thor as I’m often asked this exact question at conventions and events.

It all began around 14 years ago. Back then I was quite unfit, unhealthy and overweight.  I resembled Jabba the Hutt more than I resembled Thor.

My lifestyle habits then were damaging to my health, so I made the decision to change some things. I found balance in working out and healthy eating, but not giving up on the things I loved like gaming, TV, movies and pro wrestling. I’m a Nintendo 64 fanatic and First Person Shooter Fiend. I also enjoy a good game of Age of Empires. Nothing beats the classics!

From this I learned to be disciplined so that I would get my daily exercise and nutrition right, then reward myself with movie and gaming nights. It’s about finding that right balance and finding something that inspires you.

That brings us to more recently when I first saw the Marvel movie Thor. I was taken back at the physique and development of Chris Hemsworth. He went through a transformation himself, from being quite lean to a lot more muscular. I thought if he can make such a change, why can’t I?  A positive attitude and self-belief really helps. Everyone is capable of doing incredible things.
