Thor's Conventional Eating Tips

Mighty Gods like Thor of Oz need to keep nutrition in check to maintain energy levels and stay on track with goals. This is no different when it comes to working at conventions like Comic Con!

Thor of Oz, Andrew Lutomoski shares the best tips for eating on very busy days he’s learnt from working at conventions across the country.

Healthy eating on the go

We all know that eating well in our normal environment takes some discipline and effort. What’s more challenging is eating well whilst travelling or attending day or weekend long events. It requires planning, preparation and can cost you valuable time. Did anyone say meal prep?

Over the past three years I have attended around 15 Comic and Pop Culture Conventions, dressed up as my favourite Marvel character, Thor. You could say that I am a seasoned Cosplayer!  Most of these are interstate which means I’m away from home for at least 2 to 3 days.

There’s just no way I’m going to find a cooler bag big enough to carry enough meals for that length of time. Not only would that be impractical but I want to enjoy myself when I go away to these conventions. I like to enjoy some nice foods and eat out rather than from containers the entire time.

Through trial and error, I have learnt a lot about how to eat on-the-go. I haven’t developed an exact blueprint of how I eat healthy whilst travelling, but I do have some tips you might find useful and can perhaps apply yourself when heading away for a few days. Whether that be your favourite Comic Convention or weekend escape.

You can stay on track whilst travelling with a little preparation and motivation

1. Eat 3-4 larger meals during the day

Remember the good old days when you used to do this? Don’t worry, you’re not gonna lose your gains, bro! Having 3-4 decent meals should keep you fuller for longer, which means you can spend more time enjoying your daily activities and less time stressing about getting your 30g of protein every 2-3 hours.

2. Start the day with a big breakfast

Prepare for the long day ahead with a meal that’ll keep you fuelled for quite some time. I like to have protein and fats only for my first meal of the day, I include around 60- 80g of protein which keeps me full for hours. I also get in around 1/3 – 1/2 of my daily intake of fats in this meal which is great for the brain and cognitive function. This high protein and fat meal should prevent any “carb crashes” as your blood sugar will rise steadily as your system digests the food.

3. Bring a meal replacement shake

Making sure you have a good meal replacement (MRP) on hand is key to staying fueled and on track with your goals. My go-to is 80g of Earth Protein mixed with coconut water and some fruit. This will top up my protein intake for the day and keep me well hydrated. Containers of chicken, rice and broccoli are going to require a chilled environment to keep from going nasty, and that’s going to take up precious baggage space. Do you really want to lug around a cooler bag with 5kg of ice bricks in it every time you go somewhere?

4. Have some convenient snacks handy

Fruit and nuts are so easy to take along in a small bag and can be accessed anywhere without getting too messy or needing to be heated, which again will save time for the fun activities and allowing more time amongst all the action.

5. Eat well at dinnertime

By the end of the day, I have usually spent a solid 8 -10 hours on my feet keeping very active. I generally would have exercised in the morning too, so I’m going to need to replenish glycogen stores and get enough calories in to allow my body to recover. I always like to head out for dinner when I am away or travelling. I love checking out new restaurants, experiencing new foods or opting for my favourite which is a nice BIG grass-fed eye fillet with potatoes and some seasonal veggies. A cheeky ale or two will also be con-sumed.

So that’s it! I like to keep things simple and spend less time stressing about food and more time enjoying my experiences when travelling. It’s all part of a healthy lifestyle and balance.
