Can your supplements be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
In Australia, the Food Standards Code (FSANZ) requires all products sold as Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods to include a warning that they are not suitable during pregnancy.
This doesn’t mean every product (like a simple protein powder) is unsafe, but the warning is in place because some supplements — such as pre workouts, fat burners, and stimulant-based products — may contain ingredients that aren’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Because every situation is different, it’s important to:
- Consult your GP or healthcare professional before adding any supplement to your diet during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Check product labels carefully for mandatory warnings and guidance
