Resetting After a Big Festive Season
The Festive Season Aftermath
So the festive season is over and holidays are wrapping up and I hope you soaked up and savoured every moment! Socialising, staying up late, snoozing your alarm, and slowing down a little 😴🎄
For me personally Christmas isn’t a huge blow out like some people, I don’t tend to drink on Christmas day and the day begins with a morning run/walk with my Mum and Dad followed by a surf at the beach before opening a few gifts with my Nan and Uncle.
My favourite part of Christmas day this year was being in the kitchen with my Mum preparing the food and then stacking the dishwasher with my Dad after having some trifle and ice cream for dessert. That afternoon I went for an 8km walk along the beach and it was absolutely beautiful.
As I mentioned everyone's Christmas day is different, take for instance my Brother, he is living in London so this year he was sitting by a fire in the Cotswolds in the UK with his girlfriend eating mince pies and enjoying British Christmas traditions - there is no lack of traditions in the UK!
So that brings you to boxing day and the few days we have to ‘reset’ before New Year’s Eve or for some it might just be one big week of relaxing. For me I enjoy combatting a little of the Christmas goodies with a wholesome start to my boxing day.
My boxing day kicked off with a 630am walk with friends along the beach in Currumbin followed by an Acai from our favourite Acai spot on the Gold Coast - The Salt Mill!
I then whipped out my boogie board and fins and was out in the water!
The three of us felt really good about our morning. It was just the reset we needed - movement, good company and good food.
Reset
Now a reset can look different for everyone - there are no set rules or guidelines.
For me, it's important to frame my reset as anything but a punishment or ‘working off’ the things I drank and ate.
The festive season is to be guilt free and fun... but this guilt free period can’t be forever! 🙂
Now it is time to reassess our goals and run straight ahead into 2023 bringing with us all the best bits of 2022 and maybe leaving behind a few things.
What do I want to leave behind?
For me I want to leave behind any self doubts that are holding me back from achieving my goals.
I want to stop worrying about what others think, leave behind any fears that limit me and well I just really want to enter 2023 with a positive outlook on the year ahead and have my personal goals clear in my mind!
Now this is great in theory but I always recommend putting pen to paper with our goals. This, as well as sticking to the plan is the hard part!
To throw some stats at you… 80% of people forget their New Year's resolutions by February (Nonterah, C., 2021). A common reason for this is the goal/goals are too ambitious and not achievable.
So our goals need to be challenging enough to inspire changes to achieve them, but they also don’t want to be completely impossible!
Okay now let's take action! Where do we start?
Firstly here is a list to run through to help you make sure you are feeling reset and refocused!
You won’t be able to set your 2023 goals without a clear mind and at the end of the day we all operate in different ways.
If you're not in the headspace to set goals, here are a few tips to help get you there:
- Go offline - I truly believe disconnecting can help me reconnect. A few days or a week if you can leave Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat and minimise reading other people's stuff and consuming a constant stream of highlight reels can really help clear the mind.
- Change of scenery - get out into nature and take a hike in a new place, visit a new beach spot. Clear your mind and try to get a different perspective.
- Chat with friends or family - talk about anything that is on your mind with those closest to you, chat about your dreams, ideas and goals, this can help get clarity.
- Get active - a healthy body and healthy mind helps everyone succeed. Go for a surf, do some yoga, play a round of golf, skateboard, lift weights, box, go to a spin class - anything to get the endorphins pumping.
- Self reflection - evaluating past failures help to compile knowledge into a plan to move forward and avoid repeating past mistakes. Eg. Learning what triggers me to skip a fitness session or eat poorly is a great way to avoid it happening again.
So here we are.. Day 1 of 2023 - a new year!
… or maybe you're reading this on Day 5, 6 or even Day 10 of 2023, we have over indulged a little, the number of the scales may have gone up a tad and we feel a little sluggish - but it was totally worth it!
Today is the day though to turn it around, the rest is about to begin and we are going to get back on track!
Let's start setting goals
1. Sleep
To start with, make sure you've caught up on sleep and are feeling well rested - I mean 7-9 hours, especially after socialising with family nonstop for a week, you will need it!
y having enough sleep you will also be in a far better position to train and eat healthily.
A lack of sleep can be a direct correlation to an increase in caloric intake. (Everyday Health, 2022)
2. Drinking
... or lack thereof when it comes to festive season drinks.
Put down the alcohol and sugary drinks, grab a fresh water bottle and make it your mission to drink at least 2 litres of water a day.
3. Endorphins
If you're like me, I get the blues pretty bad after overindulging.
The best thing to combat this is a solid hour of cardio - I personally love going for a run, nothing beats it!
If running isn’t your thing then head to the gym or do anything that gets your sweat on!
4. Eat Well
Now isn’t the time to skip meals, restrict or try fad diets.
Eat healthy wholesome foods and find what works for you, some people track calories, some find that intermittent fasting helps and others opt for a high protein and lower carb diet.
Whatever it is that works for you, it should be sustainable and make you feel more energetic.
Now I am off for that 1 hour sweat session to get the endorphins pumping!
