Sport climbing is a form of rock climbing that relies on permanent anchors fixed to the rock for protection. This differs from traditional climbing where climbers must place removable protection as they climb.

Sport climbing has three main disciplines:

  • Speed climbing – climbing 15 meters in less than 6-8 seconds
  • Lead climbing - a height competition, how high can you get in the specified timeframe
  • Bouldering - a 5m or less climb where climbers are ranked on the number of routes they have completed in the designated timeframe
