In Japanese karate means “empty hand” and is a striking form of martial arts. Karate consists of punching, kicking, knee strikes and elbow strikes however, the main characteristic in fighting style is the use of open hand techniques such as, knife-hand, spear-hand and palm-heel strikes.
Speed, strength and flexibility are critical to mastering this martial arts discipline. Training usually consists of skill practice and sparring against an opponent and strength, conditioning and resistance training can be incorporated to enhance the skill training aspect.
