Why Protein Powder Prices Keep Rising
Whey Protein Supply Is Under Pressure
Whey protein is derived from dairy production, specifically as a by-product of cheese manufacturing. That means whey availability depends heavily on global milk supply, dairy production volumes, and international demand.
Right now, demand is growing faster than supply.
Protein has become far more mainstream over the past few years. It’s no longer just athletes and gym-goers buying protein powder — high-protein foods, snacks, drinks, and meal options are now everywhere, and more consumers are actively increasing their protein intake for:
- Muscle recovery and maintenance
- General health and wellness
- Satiety and appetite management
- Healthy ageing and active lifestyles
As demand continues to rise globally, manufacturers are competing for a limited supply of high-quality whey raw materials. We expect some businesses may not be able to secure any supply.
The result of this is higher ingredient costs across the board.
Why Whey Protein Isolate and Concentrate Prices Are Both Rising
Historically, WPI has always carried a higher price due to its additional filtration and higher protein content.
But more recently, WPC prices have also risen significantly - in some cases getting surprisingly close to isolate pricing.
We’ve been in the protein industry for over 15 years, and this level of sustained increase over such a short period is something we genuinely haven’t seen before.
Global Costs Continue Adding Pressure
Alongside rising raw material prices, there are also broader economic pressures impacting the cost of producing and shipping supplements worldwide.
Freight costs remain elevated, fuel surcharges have increased, and global shipping routes continue facing ongoing disruption. You’ve likely heard about the global uncertainty surrounding major trade and shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, which continues affecting international freight and fuel markets.
While the Australian dollar has improved slightly recently, it hasn’t been enough to offset the broader increases in ingredient and logistics costs.
There’s also usually a delay between commodity pricing and retail pricing. Even when raw material costs stabilise temporarily, businesses are often still working through supply contracts and inventory purchased at much higher prices months earlier.
Will Whey Prices Go Back Down?
At this stage, there are no clear indications that whey prices will return to previous lows in the near term.
Industry forecasts currently suggest protein raw material pricing is likely to remain elevated throughout 2026, particularly for high-quality whey ingredients.
One thing we won’t do is compromise on quality, food safety, or nutritional standards to reduce costs. We’re not interested in switching to lower-spec ingredients or cutting corners simply to hold pricing artificially low.
We, like all brands across Australia, will continue facing pressure to adjust pricing to remain in business.
How to Check If Your Protein Powder Is Worth the Price
As prices rise, transparency becomes even more important.
We know we sound like a broken record on this one – but the only way to be sure is to be able to view recent and up to date protein tests from accredited laboratories.
Independent testing helps verify that the protein content listed on the label is accurate and that the product meets quality standards. We’ve been testing and sharing our results for over 13 years, you can check out our latest independent lab testing here.
How to Save Money on Protein Powder
We know rising costs aren’t ideal, and while we can’t completely avoid broader industry price increases, there are still a few simple ways to get more value from your supplement routine.
Buy Protein in Bulk to Reduce Cost Per Serve
Many of our products are available in larger sizes with built-in bulk discounts - if you use the same staples consistently, buying in bulk is the most cost-effective option over time.
Consider Alternative Protein Options
A lot of products across our range offer very similar nutritional benefits with slightly different ingredient profiles or price points.
For example, if Whey Protein Isolate is stretching the budget, Whey Protein Concentrate can still provide excellent protein content and strong macros at a lower price per serve. Even better value is Micellar Casein - with the bonus of being great with less liquid for a tasty custard/pudding consistency, but still 23g+ protein per serve.
Similarly, blends like Protein Matrix+ can offer a balance between performance, texture, digestion, and value.
If you don’t mind moving away from dairy – the plant based proteins have not seen the price increases that dairy has, so now might be a good time to try Earth Protein, or one of the other plant-variants.
